Why Our Blackstone On the Go Griddle Is Perfect for Camping

Cooking at the campsite should be simple. We want to spend our time enjoying the outdoors—not wrestling with bulky equipment or cleaning a grill for half the evening. That is why our Blackstone On the Go griddle has become one of our favorite pieces of camping gear.

It gives us a versatile cooking surface while still being easy to set up, fold away, and transport. From a quick breakfast to burgers for the family, it handles almost anything we want to cook.

Built for Quick Setup and Sudden Weather

One of the best things about our Blackstone is how quickly we can set it up and put it away. The folding design and built-in wheels make it especially convenient when we are camping.

If rain starts moving in, we do not have to wrestle with a large, awkward grill. We can let the griddle cool, close it up, roll it beneath the camper, and protect it from the weather without turning cleanup into an event.

The wheeled, folding design keeps the griddle close to the camper and easy to move when the weather changes.

The wheels also make travel-day storage much easier. Our griddle rolls up the camper’s step rails and fits below the bunks with a little careful wiggling. Once it is in place, it stays secure while we travel. That portability is a major advantage over the large, clunky grills we used to bring.

One Cooking Surface for Almost Every Meal

Before getting the Blackstone, we did not cook outside nearly as often. A traditional grill was useful for certain foods, but it often felt like more work than it was worth. The Blackstone is different because it works more like an outdoor kitchen.

  • Eggs, bacon, pancakes, hash browns, and breakfast potatoes
  • Burgers, hot dogs, and grilled sandwiches
  • Chicken, steak, and vegetables
  • Fried rice and stir-fry
  • Quesadillas, cheesesteaks, and other quick meals

The flat cooking surface makes it easy to keep an eye on several foods at once—and lets the family join the campsite cooking.

Instead of carrying several different cooking appliances, we have one griddle that can handle almost everything our family wants to eat. Small ingredients do not fall between grates, and we are not balancing a pan on top of an uneven grill.

The Blackstone Accessories We Always Bring

The right accessories make using a Blackstone much easier. We have built a collection of tools that covers cooking, cleaning, and regular griddle maintenance.

Griddle Spatulas

A good pair of long griddle spatulas is essential. We use them for flipping burgers, turning pancakes, moving vegetables, and dividing food into portions. Two spatulas are especially useful when chopping food on the griddle or handling larger items.

Burger Press

Our burger press helps us make evenly shaped patties and is especially useful for smash burgers. It creates good contact between the meat and the hot surface, helping produce the browned edges that make griddle-cooked burgers so good.

Scrapers

We keep scrapers nearby while cooking—not only for the final cleanup. A quick scrape between different foods removes stuck-on pieces and gets the surface ready for the next part of the meal.

Oil and Water Bottles

Squeeze bottles are another simple accessory we would not want to be without. We keep one filled with cooking oil and another with water. The oil bottle makes it easy to apply a thin, controlled layer before cooking or seasoning. Water helps loosen food residue while the griddle is still warm.

Cleaning and Seasoning Supplies

Our cleaning and seasoning kits help us care for the griddle after each use. Keeping the surface clean and properly seasoned protects it and prepares it for the next meal.

We have seen what can happen when a griddle is stored without being cleaned, so we make cleaning and seasoning part of our normal routine. Fortunately, the Blackstone is forgiving. If cleanup gets forgotten—or something pulls us away before we finish—the surface can usually be restored with the right tools, a little time, and some elbow grease.

Grease-Trap Foil Liners

Grease-trap foil liners are a must for us. They catch grease and cooking debris, making cleanup much more manageable. Once everything has cooled completely, we can remove the liner and dispose of it properly instead of scrubbing the grease container after every meal.

Spatulas, scrapers, tongs, squeeze bottles, and grease liners make both cooking and cleanup easier.

Our After-Cooking Routine

We try to clean and season our griddle after every use. After the food is removed, we leave the surface warm and carefully scrape leftover food and grease toward the trap. When needed, we add a small amount of water to loosen stubborn residue.

Once the surface is clean and dry, we apply a thin layer of oil. This helps maintain the seasoning and protects the cooking surface until the next meal.

A quick scrape, wipe, and thin coat of oil leave the seasoned surface ready for the next campsite meal.

Always follow the care instructions for your particular griddle, and allow it to cool properly before folding, covering, moving, or storing it.

Connected to Our Camper’s Propane Supply

Our camper has a quick-connect propane connection, which makes the Blackstone even more convenient. Instead of packing small disposable bottles or carrying a separate 20-pound tank, we connect the griddle with the appropriate hose and adapter. That gives us access to the camper’s two 40-pound propane tanks.

Our camper’s propane quick-connect means there is no separate bottle or 20-pound tank to carry.

Anyone considering a similar setup should verify that the hose, fittings, pressure regulation, and griddle configuration are compatible with the camper’s propane system. Use approved components, follow the manufacturers’ instructions, and check every connection for leaks before lighting the griddle.

Why We Prefer It to a Traditional Camping Grill

Our Blackstone has removed several frustrations we experienced with a traditional grill. We no longer wrap grates in aluminum foil or use wire grill brushes that never seemed to get everything completely clean. There are no open grates for small pieces of food to fall through, and we are not hauling a huge grill that takes up valuable storage space.

Most importantly, we use the Blackstone far more often than we ever used our old camping grill. It is convenient enough for a quick meal, large enough to feed the family, and versatile enough that we do not feel limited to typical grilled foods. When the meal is finished, it can be cleaned, folded, and rolled out of the way.

A Practical Addition to Our Campsite

The Blackstone On the Go griddle has become a true one-tool-fits-all solution for our campsite cooking. Its folding design works with our storage space, the wheels make it easy to move, and the flat cooking surface gives us more meal options than a traditional grill.

With a good set of spatulas, a burger press, scrapers, squeeze bottles, cleaning supplies, seasoning products, and grease-trap liners, we have everything needed to cook and care for it on the road. Blackstone offers different griddle sizes and accessories, so camping families can choose a setup that fits their own storage space and cooking needs.

Our favorite meal to prepare on the Blackstone is breakfast. There is something special about cooking bacon, eggs, pancakes, and crispy potatoes outside while the campground wakes up—and that will be the next Blackstone meal we share.
